The American Legion Fontana Post 262
Announces Dedication of New Facilities

Fontana, CA. September 14, 2007:  The American Legion Fontana Post 262 announced today their new Post Facility is now in full operation and they will hold a Dedication Ceremony on Saturday September 29th, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. The new facility is located at 15840 Foothill Boulevard in Fontana.

Fontana Post 262 was originally chartered on February 26, 1927 and took up residence at the corner of Wheeler and Arrow in November of 1931. The flag was lowered for the final time at that facility on August 31, 2007 after calling it home for almost 76 years.

The City of Fontana needed the space to expand the Fire Station adjacent to the post. After working for almost 2 years with the City and The American Legion a new facility was located and an

agreement was reached in April, 2007. The building selected was a former restaurant operating under several names including “Jim’s Steak House”.  The outside of the building needed major work, a new parking lot, and the interior was also in need of repair.  Work started in May of this year and was completed in early August.

On Saturday, September 29th the Post Facility will be officially dedicated with State, City and American Legion officials in attendance to share in this very special occasion for the members of Fontana Post 262 and the Veterans of Fontana.

The outside work was done by contractors, but most of the interior work was completed by volunteers from the post. “A lot of long hours of hard work were performed by many of the post members to make this happen. It is wonderful place to call home for the American Legion. The entire Post family, the Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion Squadron have been actively involved in getting the building ready for this opening and dedication.” said Bob Brown, the Post Adjutant.

Veterans in the Fontana, Rialto and Rancho Cucamonga area should stop in and see what the new Post has to offer. Information on eligibility and detailed information about the post can be found on the Post 262 Web Site at http://www.calegionpost262.org.

Photos of the new and old facility as well as photos of the interior are available on the website.  If higher resolution photos are need, please contact Bob Brown, Post Adjutant at adjutant@calegionpost262.org or by phone at the post(909)823-8061 or at 909-904-5440.

Fontana Post Loses Commander Just Before Relocation

Fontana, CA, July 25, 2007:  The American Legion Fontana Post 262 lost their Commander early Saturday July 21st, 2007 due to Lung Cancer. William “Bill” S. Wockley born Sept 14, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA. Bill raised his family in the Pittsburgh area and worked in the Auto Sales industry for thirty years. He was an Army veteran, serving with Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s forces in Japan during the Korean conflict. He joined Legion Post 262 some ten years ago while on vacation and retired to the San Dimas area. He and his wife relocated to Fontana because of their involvement and friends at the post. He was elected Post Commander in May of 2005 and had just been elected to his third term.

Bill is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Rudolph Wockley. Their relationship dates back some 60 years as they were childhood sweethearts. In addition he leaves behind his daughter Linda Wockley Anchors and son-in-law William and two sons: Jeff Wockley and Deborah, Jay Wockley and Michelle and a total of four grandchildren all of Pittsburgh, Pa., along with three brothers: Harry of Pekin, Ill., and Robert and Thomas, both of Pittsburgh.

The Fontana Post is scheduled to move to a revamped building on Foothill Blvd in Mid-August. Bill had spent the last year working with the City of Fontana Redevelopment Agency to find a home for the Post. Post 262 has been located in the same building on Arrow Blvd and Sierra since 1928. The move is scheduled to start next week. “It’s a real shame that Bill was not able to live long enough to see the new facility renovation completed. He worked so long and hard to find a suitable facility for us. It’s a great loss to all members of the post and veterans in the Fontana Area” said Ernest Dick, the 1st Vice and Acting Commander of Fontana Post 262.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1PM Sunday, July 29th 2007 at Fontana Post 262, 16966 Arrow Blvd, Fontana. The Family will be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders and American Legion Riders from Bill’s home on Laurel in Fontana to new facility located at Almeria Ave and Foothill. The procession will then go down Foothill to Sierra, past City Hill and arrive at Fontana Post 262 on Arrow. The memorial service will include an American Legion Honor Guard, Bugler and Rifle Squad that will provide a 21 Gun Salute. The elegy will be delivered by Ed Barton, the 25th District Chaplain.

A party will follow the memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life and the 79 years at the Arrow Facility prior to its final closing in a couple of weeks.
